"Place to see around Cusco in the Sacred Valley. Fascinating view of the ancient production of salt is still there and available for us to visit. We were there at the beginning of May and the view was perfect, weather is quite warm during the day."

"A very cool landscape and much bigger than expected. The best views are from the road leading down so if you can get your guide to stop there, I’d recommend it!"

"Maras Salt Mines are a series of thousands of terraced salt pools fed by a natural saltwater spring. The water flows into each pool and is left to evaporate, leaving behind crystallised salt that’s harvested using traditional methods that go back generations. Visually, it’s striking—layer upon layer of shallow pools carved into the hillside, each at a different stage of evaporation. It’s simple, but at that scale, it’s impressive. The timing of your visit is key. If you come during the rainy season, you won’t see much salt because it gets diluted or washed away. Later in the dry season, the pools are more defined and the process is easier to appreciate. What stands out is that it’s not fully privatised. The site is managed by local families, and the work directly supports them, which makes it feel like something worth seeing and supporting rather than just another tourist stop.
